Schengen calculator: how to calculate visa-free stay days

Citizens of countries that have a visa-free regime with the EU may enter Poland without obtaining a Schengen visa or a Polish national visa.

The main rule for visa-free stays is no more than 90 days within any 180-day period.

This rule applies not only to Poland, but to stays throughout the entire Schengen Area.

How does the 90/180 rule work?

For each day of stay, you need to look back at the previous 180 days and check how many of those days you have already spent in the Schengen Area.

If the total number of days spent in the Schengen Area reaches 90, you must wait before your next entry until some of the previously used days are no longer counted within the current 180-day period.

Keeping track of these calculations yourself, especially after several trips, can be inconvenient. To check the number of days already used and the number of days still available, you can use the official Schengen Calculator provided by the European Commission.

Who can use the visa-free regime?

Visa-free entry is available, in particular, to citizens of countries that are exempt from visa requirements for crossing the EU’s external borders under Regulation (EU) 2018/1806.

Certain categories of foreign nationals may also be exempt from visa requirements regardless of their nationality.

However, being eligible for visa-free entry does not automatically guarantee the right to cross the border. Foreign nationals must also comply with the other entry requirements set out in the Schengen Borders Code.

Can you always stay in the Schengen Area for 90 days?

Not in every case. Special rules or national exemptions may apply to certain categories of third-country nationals, which can affect the permitted duration of visa-free stay compared with the standard 90/180 rule.

In addition, the possibility of staying beyond the general limit may arise from bilateral agreements between Poland and certain countries, provided that such agreements remain in force.

Therefore, before a long stay or a return trip, it is recommended to check the rules that apply specifically to your nationality and the legal basis of your stay.

How can you avoid overstaying your visa-free period?

Keep a record of all entry and exit dates from the Schengen Area and check the number of available days before each new trip.

For the calculation, use the official Schengen Calculator provided by the European Commission:

Correctly calculating your permitted stay will help you avoid violating the 90/180 rule and reduce the risk of problems when crossing the border in the future.
