Legalization of Ukrainians in Poland in 2026–2027

Poland remains one of the main countries where Ukrainians live, work, and raise their children. However, 2026 has become a turning point: while previously most issues were resolved through PESEL UKR status, the authorities are now gradually transitioning the system toward long-term legalization mechanisms.

The main news is that temporary protection has been extended until 4 March 2028. This means that Ukrainians with UKR status can continue to stay in the country legally, work, and exercise their basic rights. However, the Polish authorities are making it clear that automatic extensions after this date should not be expected.

Therefore, those who see their future in Poland should already consider switching to a more stable status — for example, obtaining a temporary residence permit based on employment, studies, business activity, or family reunification. A new CUKR residence card is also being discussed and gradually introduced, which is intended to serve as a transitional option for people who have been under temporary protection for a long period of time.

It is also important to remember about documents. For some Ukrainians, mandatory identity verification and updating of data in government registers are subject to specific deadlines in 2026. These requirements should not be ignored — timely document updates can help avoid problems with confirming legal status.

The conclusion is simple: 2026–2027 is no longer only a period of temporary protection, but also a time to make long-term decisions. The earlier you begin the legalization process, the more confidently you can plan your work, education, and life in Poland.
